Visit this incredible 600-acre State Historic Site in Southern Indiana.
Located in Southwest Indiana along the banks of the Ohio River is home to a well-preserved Ancient Native American Metropolitan culture known as Angel Mounds State Historic Site. This site comprises 600-acres and features an interpretive center, ancient buildings, an archaeology lab, and a 500-acre nature preserve, hiking trails, and more. The ancient Native American remains date back to 1000 AD to 1450 AD. This Native Amerian Metropolitan area served native Americans with a wide radius area; it provided residential homes, religious traditions, trade, agriculture, and other important cultural needs of the Mississippian Native Amerian.
Today, visitors can enjoy hiking trails to historic earth mounds to experience the ancient lifestyle. Tour the original homes and buildings to see the well-preserved original pottery, and artifacts while enjoying the stunning views of the area. Located on-site is the archaeologic lab, using the latest excavating techniques under the direction of Glenn Black. Visitors can start their journey at the interpretive center, which was designed to fit the landscape and preserve the original history of the area. A reasonable admission fee is required for entry. The center is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. Specialized tour hours are from 11 am to 1 pm. Self-guided tours and hiking trails are always available. Free parking is located in the interpretive center.
