The USS Midway Museum is a historical naval aircraft carrier museum located in downtown San Diego, California at Navy Pier. The aircraft carrier houses an extensive collection of aircraft, many of which were built in Southern California.
The USS Midway was in service from 1945 to 1992, making it the longest serving aircraft carrier in the United States in the 20th century. It was the only carrier to serve the entire length of the Cold War and beyond. About 200,000 sailors served aboard her. The USS Midway was brought to its final resting place at Navy Pier in San Diego on the 10th of January, 2004. It opened as a museum on June 7th of the same year.
Admission includes self-guided audio tour of the ship’s sleeping quarters, engine room, bridge, brig, post office, officers quarters, primary flight control room and more. There is also information about all the different types of aircraft aboard with a few that you can climb into the cockpits. There is also a fun variety of flight simulator rides available. The museum hosts over 700 events each year including Navy retirement and re-enlistment parties, field trips, and an overnight program for children. Many television shows have been filmed aboard the Midway including American Idol, Travel Channel, Discovery Channel and The Bachelor. Ticket prices are $26 for ages 13+ and $18 for ages 6-12.
