South Dakota Air and Space Museum

See 30 combat aircraft and missiles that are a part of American military history.

Located next to Ellsworth Air Force Base, just minutes away from Rapid City, the South Dakota Air & Space Museum is spectacular. Entrance to the museum is free; however, donations are always welcome. Take a self-guided tour and don't be afraid to ask staff members any questions you may have. The museum honors the multiple missions of Ellsworth AFB and aviators in general.

The historical aircrafts are amazing and the signage and stories about the missions and the pilots provides visitors with deeper insight. A couple of their major exhibits are of the B-1B Lancer and the B-29 Superfortress. They have indoor and outdoor displays, artifacts, and a missile silo. Visitors can touch and enter some of the planes and there are many great areas for photos. The flight simulator is always a big hit too. Due to its proximity to the AFB, you may also see military planes flying in formation above you. Anyone who loves planes will enjoy their time at this air and space museum.
