Visit the region that inspired our former president to establish the national park system.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park lies in western North Dakota, where the Great Plains meet the Badlands. This is a pristine habitat where bison, elk, and prairie dogs thrive. The park is known for sights like the colorful Painted Canyon and the Maltese Cross Cabin, where President Roosevelt once lived. Follow the Scenic Loop Drive to enjoy several overlooks and hiking trails.
In 1883, Theodore Roosevelt came to Dakota Territory to hunt bison. Little did he know how this adventure would forever alter the course of the nation. The rugged landscape and strenuous experience would help shape a conservation policy established by Roosevelt himself. You can also see Roosevelt's historic cabin, herds of bison, and a simply awe-inspiring backcountry landscape within the park. You can explore the park day or night, any time of the year. Visitor center hours vary by season, and there are occasional road closures due to snow and ice.
Campgrounds within the park are open year-round. All visitors should take the time to observe the wildlife in their natural habitat. Mammals that live here include bison, bighorn sheep, elk, mountain lions, and of course, prairie dogs. Bring your binoculars to spot the migratory birds that nest in the trees. There are over 100 different species that come and go, including chickadees, great horned owls, sandhill cranes, sparrows, golden eagles, and wild turkeys. Enjoy the rugged backdrop of North Dakota's Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
