Shiprock Airstrip

Visit this unique rock formation located on Native American land.

Although hiking in this area is forbidden due to the sacredness of Navajo history, a drive-by photo is highly encouraged at Shiprock. Three volcanic pressure ridges came together and created this large piece of volcanic rock resembling a large ship. To the Navajo people, it is known as “rock with wings.” The tallest point is 7,178 feet above sea level and has been featured in many movies, most recently Jumanji: The Next Level, Transformers, John Carter, The Lone Ranger, and many more.

This is a neat area that holds deep meaning to the local Native American Navajo tribespeople. If you're passing through this part of New Mexico, it is worth it to stop and admire the beauty of these magnificent rock formations.
