Discover ancient dwellings and explore the canyons in southern Colorado.
The Canyons of the Ancients National Monument is located in southwestern Colorado. It features thousands of ancient structures and dwellings, but only 8,400 sites have been discovered thus far. The Sand Canyon Pueblo is the closest point of interest from the visitor center (19.8 miles away). Guests are welcome to go hiking, offroading, and horseback riding on the designated trails within the monument. Backcountry camping is also allowed. While exploring the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, keep an eye out for wildlife such as black bear, elk, rabbits, snakes, various birds, and more.
Be sure to stop by the Visitor Center and Museum if you can. They offer guided tours, and the staff can answer questions about different places to see. Visitor Center hours are Thursday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. Please note that leashed dogs are allowed at the monument, just not within the actual archeological sites. If you're looking for a neat outdoor attraction in Colorado, consider adding the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument to your itinerary.
