Located in an Old Courthouse, see Civil War artifacts and discover details of the war.
Originally constructed in 1840, The Old Courthouse served the people that lived in Winchester and Frederick County. It was built on the site of a previous courthouse dating back to1741. During the Civil War, the building was used as barracks, a hospital, and a prison. Several areas on the wall were protected with glass before renovation to show where the soldiers wrote notes, thoughts, names, poems, etc. The building houses the Shenandoah Valley Civil War Museum with a collection of memorabilia from the Civil War, such as guns, ammunition, soldier uniforms, and other artifacts.
The second floor is set up like the courthouse would have been before the war. This historical museum is located in Old Town Winchester in the Pedestrian Mall. It is open Monday - Saturday from 10 am - 5 pm and Sunday 1 pm - 5 pm. Admission rates are around $5 for all ages. If you're into American history, this site will prove to be informative and worth your time.
