Visit the place where the American Civil War came to an end.
This historic site features a village, tavern, and courthouse and is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm. The Appomattox Courthouse has been reconstructed and serves as a visitor center to the park. Many park staff portrays important people involved in the events leading up to the end of the Civil War, making history come alive to guests who attend a daily guided talk. Stop by the McLean house to learn about the meeting that marked the beginning of the end of the war.
You can either take a self-guided tour via car or take a walk around. Various hiking trails will take you to points of interest, such as Lee's headquarters site, artillery park, monument, and more. Bring your binoculars and be on the lookout for birds as you explore Appomattox Courthouse Historical Park. You could easily spend an hour or more learning about the end of the Civil War here, be sure to stop by the next time you're in Virginia.
