Enjoy a beautiful garden and historical home museum in southern Virginia.
Lucy Morton Hudgins began a garden in 1929, and the work was continued by her son, William Henry Hudgins. Lucy was the wife of Edward W. Hudgins, the former Chief Justice of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. Lucy was more interested in gardening than housework, so a small home was adequate for their needs. William Henry Hudgins traveled a lot. He was a personal assistant to President Truman and Admiral Carney. Throughout his travels, he collected items for the garden. Visitors will see a rose garden, herb garden, pink garden, white garden, and a wildflower garden. Take a picture of the fountain designed after the Alhambra fountains and the cloister imported from Italy. Several benches are located throughout the gardens along the paths.
The museum MacCallum is in a quiet residential area very close to Main Street. William Hudgins designed it for the Native American artifact collection of Mr. Arthur H. Robertson. Visitors can discover treasures that have been collected over 3 generations, including over 200 botanical species represented on the 6 acres of land. Walk along the hand-laid stone paths, see the Roman-style buildings, and take time to reflect at this historical site. Self-guided tours or group tours are available Monday - Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm. The museum is family-friendly, pet-friendly, and wheelchair-accessible.
