The Sandwich Glass Museum celebrates the history of glassmaking in one of the oldest towns on Cape Cod. This remarkable museum showcases over three centuries of glassmaking history and provides incredible insight into the science and processes behind working with glass. The museum has several galleries that are filled with all kinds of locally made and rare glass pieces.
Once called the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company, which was founded in 1825, was known for its use of lead-based glass and colorful, ornate designs. Strolling the exhibits brings visitors back in time and really details the meticulous glassblowing procedures. The museum holds glassblowing demonstrations using traditional techniques every hour on the hour so visitors can get an up-close look at the craftmanship it takes to make these pieces. The clear-glass furnace at the museum heats up to 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit and is only turned off once every 5 years!
On top of the extensive glass exhibits, the museum also features historical and interactive displays that provide context about the impact the glass industry has had on the quaint town of Sandwich over time.
