Discover the historic Victorian-style mansion and luscious gardens in this Southern coastal city.
Actor Joseph Jefferson built an estate and used it as his hunting lodge and painting studio while living here in the 1800s. The Joseph Jefferson mansion is on the national register of historic places and is truly a sight to see. On site, you will notice the Rip Van Winkle Gardens, which covers over 10 acres of land and allow visitors the chance to walk through and soak in the natural beauty of the old oak trees and incredible garden features. There is such a variety of colorful foliage that thrive here. Be sure to take a picture overlooking Lake Peigneur and stop by the gift shop before you go.
The price of admission includes a guided tour of the inside of the mansion and the Rip Van Winkle Gardens. It is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm, and tours begin every hour from 10 am to 4 pm. You are welcome to come and visit year-round except on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years day.
