See thousands of exotic animals at this southern Arizona zoo.
The Phoenix Zoo encompasses 125 acres and has various animal exhibits, play areas, a petting zoo, and a narrated tram ride. It has been open since 1962 and was founded by Robert Maytag. The Phoenix Zoo began as a personal project for Maytag, who also formed the Arizona Zoological Society (now the Arizona Center for Nature Conservation). It was initially called the "Maytag Zoo" but changed to the Phoenix Zoo the following year. This zoo is the largest privately-owned non-profit zoo in the nation.
There are 2.5-miles of walking trails divided into four areas. The Arizona Trail has American Southwest flora and fauna. You can also explore the Africa Trail, the Tropics Trail, and the Children's Trail (which features the petting zoo). If you need to take a break from walking, head to the Safari Train for a nonstop guided tour of the zoo. You can also participate in camel rides, ride the endangered species carousel, or cool off at the Leapin' Lagoon Splash Pad.
