A sculpture park close to downtown Des Moines, Iowa that is free and accessible for all visitors.
Pappajohn Sculpture Park is 4.4 acres and it's located within Western Gateway Park in Des Moines, Iowa. When it opened in 2009, it had 24 sculptures with 4 that were added later. The park is open all year and guided tours are offered from April through October and last about an hour. Self-Guided Tours are always available. It is free to visit and enjoy the park and all of the amazing sculptures on the property.
The park is named after John Pappajohn who was a local venture capitalist along with his wife Mary Louise Pappajohn (1933 - 2022). They donated the first 24 sculptures worth $40 million USD to the city of Des Moines from the couple's private collection taken from their yard. Before the sculptures were moved to the park many people would drive by the home to see the art.
The Pappajohn Sculpture Park is considered "one of the most significant collections of outdoor sculptures in the United States."
