See where 1,000 missiles were kept during the Cold War era.
The Minuteman Missile National Historic Site is located in western South Dakota off Interstate 90. This is the site of a missile field containing 1,000 nuclear missiles during the Cold War era. The active missiles have since been removed (early 1990s), but guests who visit will be able to see the launch control facility and center, plus the visitor center to learn about the significance of this historic site. Air Force personnel were trained to launch these missiles in case of an impending attack from foreign enemies.
Beginning at the time Truman was acting President of the United States, the missile field was fully operational for 30 years. It could have been used at any given time and was staffed 24/7. This historic site is open daily from 9 am to 3 pm and is closed on most of the national holidays.
