Enjoy your time outside with family and friends. This state park is located near Lake Michigan.
The Leelanau State Park is at the tip of the little finger on the Leelanau Peninsula. Once inside the park, you can visit the Traverse Lighthouse Museum and, for a small fee, take the tour to see the views from the top of the lighthouse. There is primitive camping available and a few cabins for rent on site. All of the campsites have views of Lake Michigan and access to the lake. Each campsite has a picnic table and a fire ring, but there are no electric hookups. The campground area has a large playground, trails to explore, and a pavilion. The beach is rocky and could be difficult for swimming, but it is great for wading.
If you want to go swimming, drive 15 minutes to Christmas Cove. This is a perfect area for rock hunters and stargazers. There are benches periodically where you can sit and watch the waves. Don't forget to bring bug spray with you. Midges can be especially prevalent during certain times of the year. There is a gift shop/general store that sells firewood and ice if needed. Northport is just 10 miles away, and Traverse City is about an hour away if you have to get other supplies during your trip. The campsite and lighthouse are well maintained as the State Park fees and Traverse Lighthouse tours help with the maintenance. If you choose to stay for a few nights, you will enjoy the sound of the waves as they gently crash against the shores.
