Since 1968, this is NASA's primary launch center of human spaceflight in Florida. Kennedy Space Center encompasses 144,000 acres and has 700 facilities and buildings, including the Vehicle Assembly Building where they stack NASA's largest rockets. It also features the shuttle landing facility, the control center, and more. Before Kennedy Space Center became what it is today, it was used by the military since 1949, when they began performing launch operations. By 1959, the Department of Defense handed over the Missile Operations Directorate and thousands of personnel to NASA to become the Launch Operations Directorate.
