The Glen Manor house is a historic estate that has been used for countless photo shoots and several movies. H.A.C. Taylor lived in Newport and New York City but began buying farmlands in Portsmouth, Rhode Island because he loved the country life. He first purchased 111 acres in an area called The Glen, and by the end of 1909, he accumulated 700 acres. In 1920, he hired John Russell Pope, the same architect that designed the Jefferson Memorial in Washington D.C. His design for Taylor was similar to the French Petit Trianon at Versailles. Taylor died in 1921 before the project was finished, but his son Moses continued to work on the estate.
By 1923, the home and garden were complete. The Portsmouth Historical Society and volunteers from the town created a plan to make the house available to the public for special events, weddings, meetings, receptions, and private gatherings. Check their website for annual events such as the free summer pops concert and mistletoe madness in the winter.
