This 1,000-acre nature preserve is an incredible spot to see centuries-old trees, waterfalls, and wildlife in the southwestern region of Ohio.
Explore 15 miles of pristine trails lined with cliffs, waterfalls, and towering trees at Glen Helen Nature Preserve. Located in the quaint town of Yellow Springs, this 1,000-acre protected region was given to Antioch College in the 1920s and is the largest private nature preserve in the area! Glen Helen is a place to come to escape into the wilderness, peacefully observe plants and wildlife, take lovely photos, and take the deepest breath of fresh air.
One of the preserve's standout features is of course Yellow Spring, which is a natural spring that has held major significance to the region’s Indigenous peoples and of which the neighboring town was named after. Some of the trees in Glen Helen are even believed to be around 400 years old, and during nature walks you can expect to see colorful wildflowers, trickling streams, stunning waterfalls, and wildlife such as hawks, deer, great blue heron, beavers, turtles, and many others.
There’s a rehabilitation center on the preserve’s property that takes in sick and injured birds so they can be released back into the wild. There is also the Trailside Museum, which is open during the weekends and boasts interactive exhibits and displays. Glen Helen holds numerous educational programs and community events to further encourage the public to get involved and learn about the wonderful nature here in the Midwest. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape on the trail, want to snap some beautiful photos, or learn about the region’s fascinating native flora and fauna, Glen Helen Nature Preserve is sure to provide you with exactly the experience you’re looking for.
