See the history of North America from the Native American Wars to the Civil War.
The Fort Meade Museum is located in the Old Headquarters Building in Fort Mead. Besides the museum, the fort also houses the VA hospital and training site for the reserves. The museum has 3 floors full of artifacts, pictures, and written records. It features interesting background history about the Seventh Cavalry and many other Army units. It has carefully organized displays with Little Big Horn and an Indian horse that survived the battle.
The Fort Meade Museum shows visitors what life was like for the men in the military and the families involved. Be sure to watch the short video before the tour to gain insight into what you will see. This museum provides an excellent overview of the area when the only people were the nomadic tribes up until fur trappers and traders came along. If you watch closely enough, you may also see young cadets going through their marching drills and exercises on the property. If you enjoy history, you will love a visit to the Fort Meade Museum in South Dakota.
