Experience a day in the life of a tenant farmer.
Rhode Island bought the 48-acre farm, formerly the Samuel P. Colt estate, for a state park. It is now known as Coggeshall Farm Museum. Samuel Pomeroy Colt (1852 - 1921) created the largest rubber company called the United States Rubber Company. In later years, the name was changed to Uniroyal. This preserved 1790s farm is used as an educational resource for the public. It is a living history museum and shows visitors what it was like to live and work daily on a farm back in the day. The staff brings the story alive through authentic reenactments.
The farm has some historic buildings, heirloom plants, and heritage-breed animals on site. The forge building was donated by Luther Blount, who owns Blount Boats and Seafood in Warren. It was built in the 1970s. The Cart Shed has been used for a few things over the years, such as a tool shed and cart maintenance shop. It now serves as a textile demonstration featuring a historic loom with spinning wheels and other wool processing equipment. A stone structure called the cheese house was used to store milk and butter. It was close to the water source, which was crucial for the cleanliness of dairy processing. You can also see the Spring House that sits over the freshwater spring. This was the primary water source of the farm up until the late 1980s. The Hay Barn has a hayloft for hay storage and small hoofstock.
The Coggeshall Farm Museum is open from April through October. Hours of operation are Thursday - Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for kids, and children 3 and under are free. Visitors can tour a furnished tenant farmhouse and see the chickens and piglets born in the spring. Every July, Coggeshall Farm Museum hosts The StoryWalk, where they read a classic children's book. This is a great attraction for children and adults visiting Rhode Island.
