Visit one of the top family-friendly attractions in Des Moines.
Blank Park Zoo has been an Iowa tradition since 1963 and is located in southern Des Moines, Iowa. They have expanded quite a bit over the years. The most recent addition was in 2013 to the Africa exhibit, where they added rhinos, ostriches, and the Africa aviary. This zoo is open daily from 10 am to 4 pm. Animals you will see include lions, tortoises, tigers, penguins, giraffes, red pandas, sea lions, and more. There is also a discovery center, critter corner, Australian aviary, and kids' kingdom within the zoo.
Other fun things to do include camel rides, the carousel, giraffe feedings, behind-the-scenes experiences, and the train. These activities are not included in a general admission ticket. On certain weekends in October, the zoo has an event called Night Eyes, which is open from 5 pm to 9 pm. Tickets to this event are separate from general admission. Kids are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes for Night Eyes, but they cannot wear full face masks to keep it family-friendly. There will be characters in the zoo handing out treats, and the train and carousel are open. Learn about wildlife animals and see them up close at the Blank Park Zoo.
