Berkeley Spring State Park happens to be the first natural mineral spring spa, and it has brought medicinal purposes that date back to colonial times. The natural hot springs were first popular among the native Americans, attracting tribes from Canada all the way to the Carolinas. Once colonial settlers learned about the great waters and their benefits, word swiftly spread across the colonies. The most famous advocate was undoubtedly George Washington, who worked as a survey party and learned of the hot waters. He made notes in his personal journals and continued to return to the natural springs throughout his life. With his effort, the area became popular for health and medicinal needs. Those who signed the Declaration of Independence purchased the land when it came available in 1776, and the health resort was established. It was named Town of Bath, and the name was borrowed from England. In 1776, a man known as James Rumsey was hired to construct five bathhouses. Rumsey constructed the Roman bathhouse as well as other public buildings. These buildings and resort facilities are still operational to this day, and past traditions, as well as modern spa trends, are still incorporated.
The Romain bathhouse was built in 1776 and is the most popular within the state park. The bathhouse contains 750 gallons of mineral water with whirlpool jets that are pumped from the natural hot springs. The water is heated to a cozy 102 degrees for continuous comfort. The water is used in a variety of services including the bathhouses, the sauna, the showers, and more. Reservations are required and can be made by calling the main Roman bathhouse. The bathhouse rates are based on 30, 60, and 90-minute sessions. Guests can enjoy individual, couple, family, and group services. Visitors can purchase spa packages for a custom experience. Come let your troubles melt away in this phenomenally relaxing place.
