Come and explore this unique edible landscape.
The Beacon Food Forest is a community service forest, providing visitors with free food. It is spread over seven acres, making it the largest food forest in America. The project was first realized in 2009, when four students came together for a project with the idea of a food park, calling it Jefferson Park Food Forest. The students presented the idea to Seattle City, and through a few outreach classes, they received a grant of $20,000 to hire a design team. In late 2011, the team finished the designing phase and received $100,000 to proceed with phase one.
Later, this local community applied for a second grant of around $85,000 from the city, wanting to build educational services, which was granted. With the newfound funding, they proceeded to phase 2, where the project currently stands. It is currently called Beacon Food Forest, and due to recent press coverage and hundreds of fans, the Food Forest is doing well. An open harvest and feeling of community are present here, and guests may come for a self-guided tour anytime between dawn and dusk.
