Take a picture next to the 15-foot superman statue in front of the Massac County courthouse.
When driving through the state of Illinois, don't forget to take a quick stop at the impressive 15-foot-tall Superman Statue. This statue is located in downtown Metropolis, Illinois. In 1973, a comic book artist named Neal Adams was hired to build an amazing Superman theme park. The cost of the park ended up being too high, so it sadly never came to fruition. Instead, the citizens of Metropolis teamed up and built a 7-foot-tall fiberglass statue of Superman in the 1980s, and it proudly stood in the town square.
The iconic Superman now stands as a new and improved 15-foot-tall statue. The town funded the $120,000 needed to build the statue by hosting a successful fundraiser selling engraved bricks. Metropolis sent an invite to President Bill Clinton to attend the opening ceremony, but the ceremony was affected by turbulent weather when the day came. Despite the bad weather, the statue still stands as a beacon. A new coat of paint was added recently, aside from a portion on Superman's boot where visitors and residents come to rub this spot for good luck.
Visitors are welcome to take photographs and enjoy some of the nearby attractions, such as the Superman Museum located across the street, the kryptonite stone, and a neighboring statue of Lois Lane. If you consider yourself a fan of Superman, check out this impressive statue.
