Hike to Lake Falls and enjoy a breath of fresh air in rural Illinois.
Matthiessen State Park is located off of Interstate 39, just south of the Illinois River. Visitors are welcome to follow the paved and marked trails on foot to enjoy the park's natural beauty. You will see unique rock formations, canyons, streams, and forests as you explore the area. Points of interest include Lake Falls, the Giant's Bathtub, Cascade Falls, Devil's Paint Box, Strawberry Rock, and Matthiessen Lake. Please be aware that swimming is strictly prohibited in all of the waterfalls and creeks.
All playgrounds and picnic shelters are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Matthiessen State Park is open daily from 7 am to sunset. It often reaches capacity by 10 am during peak tourist season, so be sure to arrive early to get a parking spot. There are 9-miles of horseback riding and mountain biking trails located near the equestrian campground on the southern side of the park. If you are traveling to or from Chicago, this state park is a great place to explore and take a break outside for a while.
