Stop in Casper, Wyoming, and discover the rich history of the West.
While visiting the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, visitors can explore exhibits explaining the history of the Oregon, California, Mormon, and Pony Express trails in detail. The museum is full of hands-on exhibits that truly help visitors experience the real-life drama that over 400,000 pioneers went through as they followed the trails from1841 to 1868. The center is operated by the Bureau of Land Management and are in a public-private partnership with the National Historic Trails Center Foundation and the City of Casper, Wyoming. Admission is free for visitors; however, donations are always welcome.
The center is open 7 days a week from 8 am to 5 pm. Visitors begin by watching a 16-minute movie. All exhibits give visitors insight to the trials and tribulations that the early settlers and Native Americans had to endure. Take a self-guided tour and enjoy each exhibit at your own pace. Feel free to sit in the pioneer wagon, climb into a Wells Fargo stage coach, pull a hand cart (set on a treadmill to experience the pull), and take a wagon ride across a river (all while surrounded by videos and movements of what it might have been like and felt like). Watch demonstrations from the blacksmith and the Atlatl experts (an ancient hunting tool). Outside, there is even more to see, including replica cabins and a teepee.
