Hike to one of the last naturally made waterfalls along the Snake River.
Mesa Falls is located in southeastern Idaho and consists of an upper and lower waterfall. These are the last naturally made waterfalls on the Snake River, flowing through a volcanic ash canyon that cuts through the Caribou-Targhee National Forest. Feel free to explore the trails, allowing you to take in the local scenery. There are parking lots close to the falls and trails leading to different outlooks to view the upper and lower Mesa Falls.
You can also stop by the visitor center to learn more about the history of the area. This is where you can learn about the volcanic explosion that caused the ash to settle and form today's magnificent cliffsides. The upper falls are 114 feet tall, and the lower falls are 65 feet high. Spring, summer, and fall are the best times to see the falls by car. Snowmobiles can also access Mesa Falls in the winter. If you're on your way to or from Yellowstone National Park, add Mesa Falls to your travel itinerary.
