Learn about this century-old fort along California's northern coast.
Discover the natural and cultural history of Fort Ross and stop by this historic site the next time you're traveling along California's northern coast. Fort Ross State Historic Park has been around for over a century and was settled by Native Alaskans and Russians. It was also the site of California's first windmills and served as an agricultural supply area for those inhabiting Alaska before it became a state.
Bring a rain jacket with you when you visit the fort; it is often windy and rainy in the area. Please note that there is a $10 fee per vehicle when visiting Fort Ross. There are places to hike nearby, but be sure to check out the Rotchev house, where Alexander Rotchev (the last manager of Fort Ross) used to live. This is thought to be the last remaining original building here since the time of the Russian era (in the 1800s).
