Black Bear Wilderness Area

This wilderness area has a 7-mile loop hiking trail that allows visitors to experience many different habitats as well as see an abundance of native wildlife.

Black Bear Wilderness Area is a place to come escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life to become one with the tranquil nature of central Florida. Located in Sanford, Black Bear Wilderness is 1,650 acres and has a 7-mile loop trail with several boardwalks around it that allow visitors to explore different ecosystems like marshes, hardwood forests, and swamps. The wilderness area of course gets its name from black bears that live in the surrounding area – they can be elusive, but you might get lucky enough to see one from a distance while here!

Other wildlife species you can expect to encounter at Black Bear Wilderness include owls, various species of snakes, alligators, otters, and deer. It’s a well-shaded trail, but still be sure to pack plenty of water and sunblock since you’ll be in the Florida heat. You’ll also receive stunning views of the St. John’s River for a portion of the trail where you can peacefully watch the birds flying overhead and the boats zipping by.
