Take a tour inside the old fortress on Alcatraz Island.
Alcatraz Island has served as a military fortress, a penitentiary, bird sanctuary, lighthouse, and a birthplace for different movements in American history. From what we know today, this island was a military fortress from 1850-1934. This was used in the Civil War as a garrison in an effort to defend the bay area. This was a hard place for invaders to attack because there was no way to attempt a sneak attack, and it was a short distance from San Francisco’s shore.
After its time as a military garrison, Alcatraz was made into a penitentiary, which is what this island is most well-known for. It became a heavily fortified prison, which made it almost impossible for inmates to escape without getting caught. Criminals such as Al Capone, Robert Stroud, and others stayed here at one point.
Cruise boats transport visitors to and from the island. Explore the Alcatraz fortress for yourself and learn about the stories and events that happened here. Alcatraz Island is the place where you can learn more about the history behind San Francisco.
