Visit the national park where two distinct California deserts converge.
Joshua Tree National Park is a vast protected area in southern California. It is characterized by rugged rock formations and stark desert landscapes. Named for the region’s twisted, bristled Joshua trees, the park straddles the cactus-dotted Colorado Desert and the Mojave Desert. Visitors enjoy overlooks of the Coachella Valley and are welcome to explore various hiking trails weaving through the boulders of Hidden Valley. Dark night skies and surreal geological features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California.
Animals that you may see include mice, gophers, squirrels, rabbits, bobcats, foxes, lizards, skunks, bighorn sheep, and more. The park is home to many different snakes, including kingsnakes and rattlesnakes, so remain alert and stay on the marked trails during your visit. Entrance fees are required for all visitors. This fee covers a 7-day access pass for you to enter the park. The park is open 24/7 year-round, but the busy season here usually occurs from October to May. While the visitor center has free wifi, cellular service is not reliable in many areas of the park. Always bring a buddy with you and carry at least one gallon of water per person as you hike in the desert. Visit this exquisite landscape with your friends and family the next time you're touring through southern California.
