Historic Kirtland is located in Kirtland, Ohio, and tells of the humble beginnings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. At this historic site, visitors can learn about the life of the early pioneers and the early days of the members of this church in 1830. Explore the visitor center and the six historical structures, including a schoolhouse, a sawmill, an ashery, and the Newel K. Witney and Company Store. Other historic sites are located a short distance away from the main historic Kirtland site. A popular site is the Kirtland Temple, which is located about a half-mile away from the historic Kirtland site. Other points of interest include the Morley Farm, a quarry, the home of Joseph and Emma Smith, and a historic cemetery.
The Historic Kirtland Site was dedicated by the president of the Church in May of 2003. After the dedication, the site was open to the public. Historic Kirtland is open year-round. Hours are Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 8 pm, and Sundays from 1 pm to 8 pm. Tours are provided for free by volunteer missionaries. The majority of the sites are wheelchair accessible; however, some buildings do not contain elevators and the paths are not paved. Expect to spend anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours at this historic site.
