See a stunning historic plantation in western Alabama.
The Gaineswood historic plantation is located west of Montgomery, Alabama. Nathan Bryan Whitfield was the owner and architect of this masterpiece and the house still has a lot of the original furnishings from the Whitfield family. The plasterwork on the home's interior is one of the finest you will see in any 19th century home in the U.S. Gaineswood sits on a 5-acre site and features formal gardens, picnic tables, a gazebo, marble mantels inside the home, an observatory on top of the house, and more.
It is a national historic landmark that is operated as a museum. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and guided tours are available by appointment. General admission rates start at $5 for children ages 6 to 18 and $10 for adults. They offer military, senior citizen, and large group discounts. If you love touring historic places, be sure to check out Gaineswood the next time you're traveling through Alabama.
