See what life was like in this 19th-century mining town.
In the early 1860s, the first Americans who reached the Castle Dome Mountains saw signs of mining and remnants of adobe furnaces found on the banks of the Gila River. Mineral deposits were discovered along the Colorado River, and as a result, many mining camps and steamboat ports grew into towns along the river. Gold and silver claims were staked along the river and in the mountains by prospectors looking for riches. Castle Dome City has changed very little over the years, so visitors can enjoy a time capsule of the old west here.
All of the buildings are full of artifacts from the mining era, but only some buildings are original to the town. Guests can see the Adams Cabin, schoolhouse, diggers room, barbershop, blacksmith shop, church, hotel, a doctor's office, mercantile, Post Office, bank, and more. Castle Dome Mine Museum is open daily from October 15 through April 1 and offers guided tours of the city and mine. If you're visiting during the spring and summer, please call ahead to make sure they are open. Anyone that enjoys the old west and wants to see a ghost town should visit the Castle Dome Mine Museum.
