Tour the Wooden Aqueduct, experience the Metamora Grist Mill, and hike along the canal route.
Metamora City was established in 1842 and is located along the Whitewater Canal in Indiana. This Historic site was once an established town created to provide support to fellow travelers along the whitewater canal. Transportation routes were a high priority in the new Northwest Territory in 1800. The old town provided a hotel, restaurants, a place to pick up food for livestock, and other essentials. Along with transportation routes, the Whitewater Canal was used to produce hydroelectric power. The Metamora Grist Mill is an example of a water power mill, and it was used up until the 21st century. Visitors can come and tour this mill and enjoy the unique experience of grinding up a personal bag of corn mill for themselves.
Children can explore interactive exhibits at the mill and participate in activities such as learning to map out a route, packing a model canal boat, and traveling along a stimulated canal. Other buildings to tour along the canal include old brick buildings on the west side of town, including the Martindale Hotel. Another historical site to visit is the Wooden Aqueduct, which was built in 1843. It was ruined by flooding waters then later reconstructed with modified burr trusses. The Aqueduct is a historic place and is nationally recognized as a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
Visitors may also enjoy beautiful hiking trails along the Canel Route. Start at the Metamora city, which will lead to Duck Creek Aqueduct, and then to a national historic site at Twin Lock. The historic buildings are open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. A small admission fee is required for the tour. The peak season for tours is between April and October. Visitors can also buy gifts and souvenirs at the Look Book and unique items from all the historic stops along the canal route. This is a neat historic site that will definitely leave an impression on you.
