Take a safe bike ride, walk, run, or rollerblade freely without worrying about traffic or construction (for the most part) and enjoy the beautiful scenery and wildlife along the journey.
The Legacy Trail is completely paved, mostly flat, and very smooth so your ride, walk, or jog will be safe and pleasant. The trail is a non-motorized path from Palmer Ranch in southern Sarasota to Shamrock Park and Caspersen Beach Park in Venice. This pathway was a railroad corridor formerly and it passes through several habitats along the way. You will pass a gopher tortoise habitat and an alligator habitat. The gopher tortoises dig such extensive tunnels that over 300 other species find shelter in them during extreme weather conditions. They are also a protected species.
You can access the trail and park from various locations which are:
Nokomis Community Park (234 Nippino Trail East, Nokomis)
Laurel Park (509 Collins Rd., Laurel)
Oscar Scherer State Park (1843 S. Tamiami Trail, Osprey)
Bay Street Park (300 Bay St., Osprey)
Potter Park (8587 Potter Park Dr., Sarasota)
The trail is open year-round from 6 am - sunset. The length is 12.5 miles long, and there are several parks along the way and 15 rest areas with benches and facilities. There are signs throughout that give directions, yellow distance labels so you know how far you have gone, and even safety reminders. The trail is well maintained with a wide path, several public bike repair stations, and the scenery is very nice.
