Explore this walking and biking trail in western Florida.
The Legacy Trail is completely paved, mostly flat, and provides a smooth ride for bikers. This is a non-motorized path leading from Palmer Ranch in southern Sarasota to Shamrock Park and Caspersen Beach Park in Venice. Formerly used as a railroad corridor, it passes through several natural habitats along the way, including a gopher tortoise habitat and an alligator habitat. The gopher tortoises dig such extensive tunnels that over 300 other species find shelter in them during extreme weather conditions.
You can access the trail from various locations such as Nokomis Community Park (234 Nippino Trail East, Nokomis), Laurel Park (509 Collins Rd., Laurel), Oscar Scherer State Park (1843 S. Tamiami Trail, Osprey), Bay Street Park (300 Bay St., Osprey), and Potter Park (8587 Potter Park Dr., Sarasota). Legacy Trail is open year-round from 6 am to sunset. It stretches for 12.5 miles and there are several benches, parks, and rest areas if you need to take a break. The trail is well-maintained and features several public bike repair stations. Enjoy a lovely stroll or bike ride here the next time you're in the Tampa area.
